London-based casualwear brand Folk was founded in 2001. Folk’s design ethos focuses on a combination of quality fabrics, fearless use of colour and an obsession with detail. While their offline presence is focused in Bloomsbury and Soho they attract and ship to a global audience via their website.
Like Digital specialise in developing e-commerce platforms for premium retail brands using the Magento framework.
Folk approached Like in spring 2014 to help them overhaul their site, having been introduced via a mutual connection. Although very happy with their digital branding, Folk knew they needed to move with the times in terms of the platform that underpinned their online store. They were stuck on a very old version of Magento which was starting to create user experience issues. In addition, their existing website framework wasn’t responsive which was only exacerbating their concerns around their ability to compete and reach new audiences online.
Like worked with the team at Folk to understand the gap between the limitations of their existing platform and their e-commerce strategy. It became clear that in addition to a new responsive template for the website they also needed to move Folk onto a newer version of Magento to fully overcome their user experience issues.
Like attempted to engage Folk’s hosting company to put together a plan to complete the data migration required for the essential Magento upgrade. Finding them to be unresponsive Like raised their concerns to Folk that they risked becoming potential stumbling block in the project and future success of the site. They advised that a very different approach to hosting was available with their recommended hosting partner, Wirehive.
Having sold Folk on the benefits of Wirehive’s Magento expertise, consultative approach and tierless phone-based support model, Like made the introductions. Wirehive’s team worked with the e-commerce team at Folk and the developers at Like to fully understand the scope of the rebuild and anticipated traffic levels.
Having got to grips with Folk’s long term digital retail plan as well as the intricacies of the site overhaul, Wirehive were able to propose a bespoke solution utilising virtualised servers within their public cloud infrastructure. Even though the servers were virtual they were dedicated to Folk. This gave Folk the peace of mind that they wouldn’t face issues of contended resource and could quickly scale the solution as necessary to cope with growing demand.
Folk also decided to take Wirehive’s Managed Support offering. This means that Wirehive’s team of Magento experts deal with all monitoring and alerting on the platform. If something does go wrong they know about it first and can take steps to rectify it, thus further protecting the user experience and ultimately online sales.
“When we started working with Folk we realised that their needs around Magento and site performance dovetailed perfectly with Wirehive’s responsiveness and expertise. It was the obvious choice to recommend them as partners to help us realise the end goal of improving user experience.”
