Cloud consultants Wirehive selected to help the University of Surrey on their journey to the cloud.
The University of Surrey is a leading university located in Guildford dedicated to life-changing education and research. With a global outlook and culture of innovation at their heart, they aim to deliver a transformational impact on society and shape future digital economy through agile collaboration and partnership with businesses, governments and communities. It’s no surprise therefore that their Chief Information and Digital Officer has mandated a cloud-first strategy for their internal technology requirements.
With this mandate and their existing on-premise equipment coming to end of life, the University of Surrey has kick-started a large, digital transformation project in their IT team. At present this includes migrating existing infrastructure and applications to Microsoft Azure and upskilling their team to run and manage the new cloud infrastructure.
As part of that programme of work, Microsoft are providing training to the University through their Fast Track team which involves dedicated sessions on each of the architectural pillars of Azure focusing on best practice.
However, with over 800 virtual machines to manage this project required expert assistance and the University went to market to find a Microsoft partner to help.
Wirehive competed for the chance to work with the University of Surrey, against more traditional education consultancies. After spending time with the key members of the project team to understand not only their technology requirements but also their ambitions around people and process, Wirehive used their best-practice ‘Journey to the Cloud’ methodology to provide the University with a highly competitive proposal.
The main differentiator of Wirehive’s approach was the use of the agile methodology for the implementation phase which broke the project down into sprints. In fact, the University liked it so much they requested that other bidders matched the Wirehive approach.
After a long selection process, the University of Surrey decided to work with Wirehive as their Microsoft partner of choice due to the flexible cloud-native approach.
One of the main advantages was Wirehive’s ability to deploy their Azure and transformation expertise when required, allowing the University team to upskill through the formal fast track programme and hands-on learning through this project. Not only does it fit better with the University of Surrey’s values of innovation and collaboration, but it allows their IT team to move away from large fixed price engagements.
The benefit of Wirehive’s bite-sized engagement approach not only allows both sides to maximise the value delivered through each engagement, but it also makes allowances for changes to be made as new discoveries, opportunities and blockers are uncovered throughout the transformation process.
Wirehive demonstrated to the University that they can be a true partner through their approach, technical acumen and integrity, and have laid the foundations for a strong relationship with the University of Surrey.
“Working with Wirehive is a welcome change from the traditional cloud migration companies, the team are extremely professional while being flexible to our requirements, working in a truly agile fashion.”
